Infrared Radiation

Invisible Energy for Industrial Heating Processes

Heat plays a central role in many technical and industrial applications – whether for drying, heating, or activating surfaces. Infrared radiation (IR) is a proven tool in this context. As part of the electromagnetic spectrum, it offers an efficient, contactless, and precise method of heat generation. In this article, we explain the fundamentals, advantages, and applications of infrared radiation.

Fundamentals of Infrared Radiation

Infrared radiation is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength between approximately 780 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It lies in the spectrum between visible light and microwaves. Depending on its wavelength, it is divided into three ranges:

  • Near Infrared (NIR): 0.78–1.4 μm
  • Mid Infrared (MIR): 1.4–3 μm
  • Far Infrared (FIR):3–1000 μm

Infrared radiation is emitted by all warm objects. It is used technically by IR emitters, which can be electrically or gas-powered. By selectively choosing the wavelength, the penetration depth of the radiation, and thus its efficiency, can be optimized for specific materials and applications.
IR emitters are particularly efficient on surfaces with high absorption in the respective wavelength range. The radiation is absorbed directly by the material and converted into heat – without any heat loss through convection or contact.

Areas of Application and Materials

Infrared radiation is extremely versatile and finds application in numerous industrial sectors:

  • Drying Processes: Fast and uniform drying of paints, varnishes, adhesives, and coatings.
  • Plastics Processing: Heating prior to forming, welding, or bonding.
  • Food Industry: Sterilization, pasteurization, or targeted heating of packaging materials.
  • Textile and Paper Industry: Drying and heat-setting of fibers, paints, or coatings.
  • Electronics Manufacturing: Gentle heating for soldering or curing materials.

Materials such as plastics, metals, glass, textiles, or wood can be efficiently processed with infrared heat. Crucial here is the optimal matching of emitter type, wavelength, and process requirements.

Advantages of Infrared Radiation

Contactless, Targeted Heating

IR emitters enable rapid energy transfer without direct contact. This results in precise and homogeneous heating – ideal for temperature-sensitive or structured surfaces.

Energy Efficiency and Process Speed

The direct conversion of radiation into heat within the target material saves energy and reduces process times. Infrared radiation is superior to conventional heating methods, especially when short response times are required.

Modularity and Easy Integration

Infrared systems can be easily integrated into existing production lines and scaled flexibly. Depending on requirements, emitters can be individually customized in shape, size, and power.

Low Maintenance

Electric IR emitters are durable and require minimal maintenance. They have no moving parts and no complex infrastructure – ideal for continuous processes and long-term industrial applications.

Conclusion: Efficient Heat with Infrared Precision

Infrared radiation is a proven tool for industrial heat treatment. Its advantages lie in its fast, contactless, and energy-efficient heat transfer. Whether for drying, heating, or activating – IR emitters offer versatile solutions for numerous applications and materials.
