Applications of High-Pressure Discharge Lamps
with UV Component for Aquariums and Terrariums

High-pressure discharge lamps with a UV component are used in aquariums and terrariums to create a light spectrum that is as close to natural conditions as possible. They combine high light intensity with defined proportions of UV-A and UV-B radiation, which not only improves visibility but also supports key physiological processes in animals.

Objectives and Applications

The application of such lamps pursues several objectives:

  • Health: Supporting vitamin D₃ synthesis in reptiles and amphibians.
  • Behavior: Promoting species-typical activity patterns and social behavior.
  • Display: Authentic color reproduction of fish, corals, and plants.
  • Research: Use in zoological facilities and laboratories for investigating photobiological processes.

Areas of application include pet keeping, exhibits in zoos, and scientific experiments.

Basics: Spectrum and Radiation Characteristics

Sunlight comprises visible radiation as well as UV and IR ranges. The following components are particularly relevant for aquarium and terrarium applications:

Range  Wave lengths (nm)  Effects on animals and plants
UV-B  280–315  Vitamin D₃ synthesis, calcium metabolism, bone growth
UV-A  315–400  Orientation, activity, color perception
Visible  400–780  Color effect, photosynthesis processes
Infrared (IR)  780–3000  Heat regulation, thermoregulation

High-pressure discharge lamps with a UV component are designed to provide these spectra in a balanced ratio. Their high radiation intensity ensures effective coverage even in larger tanks and terrariums.

Applications in Terrariums

  • Reptile Keeping: Bearded dragons, chameleons, and tortoises require UV-B radiation for healthy development.
  • Habitat Simulation: Tropical and arid habitats can be realistically recreated using a combination of UV and visible light.
  • Behavioral Enhancement: Natural light stimulates courtship, hunting, and feeding behaviors.

Applications in Aquariums

  • Marine Aquariums: Corals benefit from high light levels and a defined UV component, which supports photosynthesis processes in symbiotic organisms (zooxanthellae).
  • Freshwater Aquariums: Fish exhibit more intense coloration under UV light. Colors and species-specific behavior.
  • Plant growth: UV radiation has a regulating effect on the metabolic processes of aquatic plants.

Advantages over conventional light sources

  • Species-appropriate lighting: Replicates sunlight with all relevant radiation components.
  • Health-promoting: Supports vitamin D₃ metabolism and strengthens the immune system.
  • High light output: Suitable for large aquariums and terrariums.
  • Long-term stability: Consistent spectral composition over many operating hours.
  • Flexibility: Can be used in various designs and system configurations.

Safety Instructions

The use of high-pressure discharge lamps with a UV component requires appropriate protective measures:

  • Operation only in specially designed luminaires.
  • Direct skin or eye contact with UV radiation must be avoided.
  • Mercury may be released if the lamp breaks.
  • Manufacturer's instructions, especially regarding distance and operating time, must be followed.

Conclusion

High-pressure discharge lamps with a UV component represent a key technology for the species-appropriate husbandry of reptiles and fish. They combine a natural light spectrum with high radiation intensity and promote the health, vitality, and behavior of the animals. They are used in aquariums and terrariums in both private animal keeping and in zoological facilities and research applications. Radium TECH offers lamp systems such as HRI spotlights, which are used for the species-appropriate keeping of reptiles and fish.
